Abstract:
The seminar aims
at exploring the body and performance of female life models in
Hong Kong. Life models here refer to the nude models posing for artists in
drawing. We will see how life models explore their bodies and deal with their
body image during and after their work. By positioning the model’s body as a
performing body, how they experience the dynamics and tensions between agency
and discipline during the working process is examined. Through semi-structured
interviews with several life models in Hong
Kong and observation of their work, this
research aims at discussing how models generate positive meanings and perceive a
better body image in their work. Although modelling can provide a resource for
models to negotiate with and even resist norms of normative femininity, it may
also potentially reinforce gender norms in some ways. Therefore, it is important
to see how models cope with these forces creatively.
